(Note: In-class Introduction to Biosafety Training is replaced with this training.)

Description:

The course addresses awareness of biohazards, risk assessment, regulatory compliance requirements, and key risk management principles including safe work practices, personal protective equipment (PPE), engineering controls, and emergency response.

  • Biosafety and biosecurity
  • Compliance requirements: NIH, CDC, and USDA guidelines for working with biological materials. (Incident reporting, Gain of Function, DURC, Import/export permit, etc.)
  • Biological risk assessment
  • Laboratory safety containment levels and standard microbiological practices
  • Primary barrier/laboratory safety equipment and facility requirement
  • Disinfection and decontamination
  • Sharps Safety
  • Biowaste handling and disposal.
  • Emergency responses: Spill control, exposure responses

This course is required for researchers who work with any biological materials such as human and animal materials, infectious agents, viral vectors, recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules, and biological toxins, but not limited. The biosafety training must be repeated every three years.
